Navigating Flash Floods: Safety Tips for Road Trips

GRAYSON COUNTY, Texas (KXII) - Harsh weather conditions led to the closure of roads and underpasses in Grayson County. Local authorities provided safety advice for residents dealing with these challenging circumstances.

These days pose difficulties for motorists. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning strikes and sudden floods create an unfavorable situation for driving.

Sherman authorities sealed off both sides of the 600 block of East Brockett Street due to flooding early Wednesday morning.

Lieutenant Jeremy Cox from the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office advises anyone driving under such conditions to slow down and comply with all barriers and signs.

One of the main reasons for accidents is speeding," Cox stated. "If the streets are wet, reduce your speed.

Although turning on your windshield wipers is obvious, leaving your headlights on—even during daylight hours—assists other motorists in spotting your car. Cox points out that rain can create a reflective effect on vehicles, making it challenging to spot them from far away.

Cox states that the well-known saying, "turn around, don't drown," starts with a high alert for standing water.

"Particularly in those low-lying regions, even a small amount of water can accumulate on the road surface causing hydroplaning," he explained.

If you encounter one, avoid hitting the brakes; instead, gently let go of the accelerator. With deceptive potholes disguising themselves as puddles, the safest approach is to navigate around them.

Although some motorists choose to park safely when they notice something amiss, others simply wish to halt and offer assistance. Lieutenant Cox advises that this decision rests entirely with the individual; however, he recommends purchasing a reflective vest to ensure visibility to other drivers.

Our deputies, local law enforcement agencies, and state troopers wear reflective vests," stated Cox. "It’s a minor investment that can significantly aid both you and your loved ones.
