Rockies End 8-Game Skid but Still Set Worst April Record in MLB History
A slim 2-1 win against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday wasn’t enough to prevent the Colorado Rockies from securing the poorest April performance ever recorded in Major League Baseball history.
Following their 8-2 defeat on Tuesday, Colorado managed to recover and put an end to their eight-game losing streak, leaving them with a 5-25 record.
In the previous season, the Chicago White Sox ended up with the lowest win-loss record in contemporary baseball history However, they still ended up with six wins by the end of April.
According to The Athletic The Rockies are currently set to lose 135 games, which is 14 more losses than Chicago's total of 121 last year.
Even though the Rockies aren’t recognized as a victorious team, their poor performance at the beginning of this season marks an alarming decline compared to past years. Throughout their 33-year history, the Colorado Rockies have experienced just nine winning campaigns and qualified for the playoffs only five times. Their peak moment came in 2007 when, despite reaching high, they were defeated by the Red Sox in the World Series.
Given how slowly they're progressing, the Rockies might be able to compete with the 1899 Cleveland Spiders' dismal performance. This particular Spiders squad has the lowest winning percentage ever in Major League Baseball, at 20 wins against 134 losses, and managed only seven victories out of their initial twenty-nine matches.
The guys are furious. They're extremely upset. Use whatever strong terms you can think of," Rockies manager Bud Black stated, as reported by The Athletic. "They are professional baseball players who aim to win games and perform at their best, but collectively things haven’t been going well for us. There simply aren't enough players performing up to par right now.
Luckily for the Rockies, they have five months to attempt reversing their season. The team from Colorado will start their upcoming series against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday.
