Maine Bill Aims to Cover Full Costs of Special Education Programs

AUGUSTA (WGME) -- A proposed bill in Maine aims to make the state responsible for covering 100 percent of costs associated with special education programs.
The legislator backing the bill states that currently, the state covers 50 percent of the program costs.

Advocates argue this places an extra strain on municipalities and urban areas, as they must find additional funds for required specialized educational initiatives while also covering all other expenses.
Several legislators expressed worries at a public meeting earlier this week regarding the financial strain on tax contributors and debated why municipalities aren't able to finance the additional fifty percent independently.
Backers acknowledge that financing everything at 100 percent may be impractical and are prepared to compromise with legislators.
