Bus Driver Fatally Struck in Tragic Collision with Semi-Truck on I-96 in Ingham County

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) -- A CATA bus traveling westward on I-96 burst into flames Wednesday afternoon, resulting in a partial closure of the highway.

The Ingham County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded to the accident at 4:15 p.m. Upon arrival, they observed that a CATA shuttle bus had collided with a semi-truck from behind. Subsequently, the CATA bus erupted into flames, causing smoke to spread over the highway.

The firefighters established that the bus contained only the deceased driver. The operator of the semi-truck emerged uninjured from the incident. Authorities are currently investigating the reasons behind the collision. Names of those involved have not yet been disclosed. A 62-year-old driver employed by Transdev, which has a contract with CATA, was declared deceased at the location.

"On behalf of all members at CATA along with their contracted service provider, Transdev, we extend our deepest sympathies and share in the sorrow following the unfortunate loss of life involving one of Transdev’s drivers. We are working closely with law enforcement authorities during this investigation," stated a spokesperson for CATA to News 10.

The Ingham Regional Crash Investigation Team remains at the site conducting their investigation into the accident.

A different collision likewise caused the closure of I-96 near Okemos Road. This particular accident also included a semitrailer, which ended up lodged within the guardrails. Fortunately, nobody sustained injuries in that incident.

The two accidents occurred several miles from each other. Authorities think they are not connected.
