Omaha Bakery Fears Potential FDA Ban on Popular Food Dyes

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWt) -- Whether it’s about the icing or the candy topping, the next time you crave something sweet, you might notice some differences.

The FDA is working towards phasing out petroleum-based synthetic blue, red, yellow, and green dyes in preference for more natural alternatives.

Debbie Kohlscheen from Cake Expressions in Bellevue mentioned that making the switch might result in increased labor and higher expenses.

People utilize beet juice," Kolscheen stated. "You can also simmer certain fruits until they turn into a thick syrup," she added. "The choice of method depends on the size of your area and whether the cost justifies the scale for that individual.

Petroleum-based dyes are present in cereals, candies, and snack foods. Certain studies indicate that these dyes may lead to behavioral problems, particularly in kids.

"We aim to ensure the safety of the food we provide for our children," stated Dr. Anne Mardis O'Keefe from Creighton University.

O'Keefe informed First Alert 6 that although eliminating dyes is progress, turning certain snacks into more natural hues won't completely resolve health issues.

"I believe we've often thought of chemicals as frightening entities, but they aren’t always scary; similarly, naturally occurring substances can also be dangerous," O'Keefe stated.

Debbie wouldn't be opposed to taking on more tasks.

We do have several clients right now who have kids with allergies to specific food colorings," Kohlscheen explained. "We must be extremely cautious whenever we prepare a cake for them.

The FDA aims to eliminate synthetic artificial colorings by the end of next year.
