New London Man Gets 50-Year Sentence for Murdering Wife and Burning Down Home

A New London A man was handed a 50-year jail term on Wednesday for killing his spouse and trying to murder their child by burning down their home.

George Dodson II, aged 26 from New London—a previous naval technician—admitted to guilt on February 19 regarding accusations of murder, endangering the welfare of a child, and first-degree arson, as stated by the state Division of Criminal Justice.

On July 20, 2022, law enforcement from New London responded to a residence on Sherman Street following a 911 report of a fire and discovered George Dodson near the property, according to statements made by the DCJ.

The city's firefighting team put out the blaze and discovered Shelby Dodson, 23, not responsive within the residence The DCJ mentioned that she passed away due to her injuries following severe trauma to her head and torso.

The firefighters also discovered a 13-month-old infant inside the house, who made it through the incident alive.

George Dodson confessed to using a hammer to kill Shelby Dodson and then burning down their home, according to DCJ. The arrest warrant stated that he informed the police he murdered his spouse due to "envy" following the decision to enter into an open marriage.

He admitted that he murdered her because he couldn't bear the idea of her loving another man instead, as stated in the warrant.

The warrant stated that he informed the police that he attempted to murder the infant by setting it on fire rather than employing a weapon.

The DCJ acknowledged the efforts of the U.S. Navy, New London Police Department, New London Fire Department, the personnel at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in handling this case.

"Even though this prison term cannot undo the suffering caused by such an atrocious and meaningless crime, the Office of the New London State’s Attorney trusts that this outcome may offer some solace to the victim's loved ones," stated State’s Attorney Paul Narducci.
