Man Accused of Tesla Arson in Kansas City Released Before Court Date
A 19-year-old accused of setting fire to two Tesla Cybertrucks at a Kansas City dealership has been released from federal custody and ordered to appear in court.
Owen McIntire was arrested earlier this month in Massachusetts and faces federal charges in the Western District of Missouri for allegedly using a homemade incendiary device to ignite two electric vehicles on March 17.
Subscribe to our NewslettersLegal papers indicate that McIntire utilized Molotov cocktails to ignite the blaze at a car lot located on State Line Road.
He faces charges for intentionally damaging property and possessing an undocumented explosive device.
The authorities aimed to maintain McIntire under arrest before his trial, pointing out concerns about potential threats to public safety and adhering to a legal rule presuming detention for crimes associated with terrorism.
McIntire's lawyers advocated for his release, stating he has no prior criminal history, strong connections to his community in Missouri, and requires both medical and mental health attention.
According to court documents, he has been identified as having autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, depression, and gender dysphoria, necessitating ongoing daily medication and therapy.
The document filed by the judge states, “He also obtains gender-affirming healthcare, starting in March of this year, and such treatment might be halted completely should he stay detained before trial. This healthcare, together with psychological assistance, plays a crucial role in maintaining his well-being. Returning to live at home with his parents would ensure that he continues receiving care from professionals acquainted with his condition and particular requirements.”
His lawyers stated that he will reside with his parents in Missouri under stringent terms, which include being confined at home with electronic surveillance.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Jessica Hedges consented to releasing McIntire.
He will be appearing in court on May 1st.
Court documents say the The fire broke out late at night. In an empty parking area, two Cybertrucks and adjacent Tesla charging stations were damaged. It seems one of the explosive devices did not go off as planned.
