Dodgers' Tyler Glasnow Faces Extended Time on Injured List

The Dodgers placed right-hander Tyler Glasnow He was placed on the 15-day injured list this week because of shoulder inflammation. It appears he will be sidelined for a longer period. Manager Dave Roberts mentions this. Sonja Chen of MLB.com Glasnow will not throw pitches for 10 to 14 days and will then undergo another evaluation.
It presents a fresh perspective compared to merely two days prior. When Glasnow was placed on the IL, things changed. on Monday Roberts minimized the seriousness of the situation. He stated that Glasnow was experiencing general bodily discomfort rather than any structural issues with his shoulder.
A break of 10 to 14 days indicates that Glasnow will miss more extended time beyond this duration. Should he receive clearance to start throwing again after this period, he would still require an incremental increase in activity levels and might need several rehabilitation outings with minor league teams before returning fully.
Glasnow is known for delivering impressive performances per inning pitched, though he hasn’t accumulated many full innings overall. Last year, he reached 134 innings, which was a career best even as it marked his ninth MLB season. His elbow troubles, particularly undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2021, frequently sidelined him. Additionally, he has dealt with back and oblique injuries throughout his career, with recent shoulder inflammation adding another obstacle.
It seems the Dodgers will have to assume that they won’t have Glasnow for at least a few weeks, perhaps longer, depending on how he responds in the next 10 to 14 days. They started the season with Glasnow in the rotation alongside Blake Snell , Yoshinobu Yamamoto , Roki Sasaki and Dustin May .
Since then, the team has become smaller. Snell landed on the IL following only two starts because of swelling in his pitching arm. Although the Dodgers considered this problem fairly mild, Snell was ultimately sidelined due to persistent discomfort. Similarly, Glasnow finds himself in a comparable situation, facing an unclear journey back after being held out for a period.
Tony Gonsolin He began the season on the injured list because of a back issue but returned on Wednesday. His addition provides the team with another starting pitcher, joining May, Yamamoto, and Sasaki. The Dodgers have a day off on Thursday, giving their pitching staff some rest time; however, they face 10 consecutive games afterward.
Ben Casparius and Yoendrys Gómez Both are presently warming up in the bullpen and able to pitch for extended innings. Justin Wrobleski , Bobby Miller , Landon Knack and Matt Sauer Are presently on an optional assignment but have joined the major league team occasionally to assist and might do so in the future.
Clayton Kershaw is currently on a rehabilitation assignment but is also placed on the 60-day injured list, which means he won't be able to return to his team for several more weeks. Shohei Ohtani Theoretically, he is set to return to pitching sometime this year; however, it remains uncertain how the Dodgers intend to manage his progression toward playing time while simultaneously using him as a designated hitter. Additionally, the timing of his comeback has yet to be determined. After undergoing Tommy John surgery towards the end of 2023—and consequently missing out on all games from the previous season—he faced further medical intervention with an arthroscopic procedure on his non-pitching arm shortly following the team’s triumph in the Fall Classic.
The club might see Glasnow, Snell, Kershaw, and Ohtani returning within the next few weeks or months, yet there isn’t clear information about this. In the meantime, they’ll probably rely on makeshift strategies such as spot starts or bullpen games, or maybe someone from their reserve pitchers will get an extended opportunity in the rotation. Additionally, the Dodgers plan to continue using Yamamoto and Sasaki under the rotational system commonly used in Japan, enhancing the chances for innovative approaches to manage their pitching staff.
