Watch Out for PayPal Invoice Scams
LAFAYETTE, La. ( KLFY )— Fraudsters are masquerading as PayPal, issuing fake invoices to pilfer your funds.
The invoice is delivered via email and seems to come from a reputable company.
Kathryn Mobley, who serves as the CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Acadiana, outlined details about a recent local scam. According to Mobley, the fraudulent invoice provided a telephone number for victims to contact.
Mobley stated, "They did not possess a PayPal account, nor did they owe anything to the business."
The customer received information in this report indicating they were responsible for paying subscription charges to PayPal.
They stated, "I questioned him about how I was meant to determine whether I could rely on him."
The ' customer support' representative stated, "If you didn't believe in me, we wouldn't have proposed resolving the issue."
Nevertheless, she doesn’t possess a PayPal account. Following more discussion, they disconnected her call.
Other national reports indicate that fraudulent invoices deceive consumers into believing they owe a company money. These invoices often include a payment link rather than a telephone number for inquiries.
"For business owners, this is also significant because it affects your reputation, deals with fraud abuse, and encompasses various other issues," Mobley stated.
Here’s how you can steer clear of an invoice scam:
- Watch out for unexpected scams. Even when conducting business with a firm, remain cautious upon receiving unsolicited emails that were neither requested nor authorized.
- Know how invoices will be delivered. Ask how the company will deliver its invoices, so you are aware of copycat invoices scammers send through other channels.
- Keep track of your subscriptions. Understanding when charges will occur helps you better discern whether a renewal email is legitimate or fraudulent.
- Don't succumb to fearmongering. Always conduct thorough research prior to consenting to any deal.
