Rodeo Legend Roy Cooper Tragically Killed in House Fire: 'We're All Shattered,' Says Son

Rodeo icon Roy Cooper passed away in a house fire in Texas earlier this week. He was 69 years old.

At the Finals in Oklahoma City, a man from Sports Illustrated confronted me," Cooper stated. "I’m unsure if I should be called Super Looper; I prefer being known as Roy. I tend not to boast about myself, and there are numerous skilled lasso throwers around these days. It wouldn’t be fair to compare me with Toots Mansfield or Dean Oliver since we competed during distinct periods. My prime was over those ten remarkable years.

In 1983, Cooper claimed the PRCA All-Around World Title and joined an elite group of only ten riders who have achieved rodeo's prestigious Triple Crown: winning three world championships in a single year.

Years afterward, he talked with PRORODEO Sports News in March 2023 about the distinctive buckle, stating, "This is the only one I put on. Ever since I earned it, I haven’t removed it."

Cooper was similarly honored with a tribute from the NationalCowboy Museum, which remembered He was referred to as "a genuine pioneer in tie-down roping, starting from his debut season in 1976 when he clinched his initial world championship, all the way to being the inaugural cowboy to amass over $2 million in ProRodeo earnings."

The museum also announced that Cooper will receive the Ty Murray Top Hand Award at this year’s PBR Heroes & Legends celebration in July.

They included, "Our thoughts are with the Cooper family and the whole rodeo community."
