Maine Proposal Aims to Ban Floating Camps

PORTLAND (WGME) -- Certain legislators are currently suggesting a ban on floating camps in Maine.
Floating camps are secured to the lake bed or attached to a dock.
The legislation would introduce penalties for establishing one, with fines ranging from $100 to $500.
- Also read: Maine has no power to prevent the 'floating camps' appearing everywhere across the state.
This could enable either the state or local authorities to take control of the camps, clear them out, put them up for sale, tear them down, or retain them if they fail to be removed within 24 hours.
Up until now, the state has not managed to regulate them since they do not fit into any existing legal categories.
The legislation enjoys cross-party backing, largely coming from Republican representatives.
