'I'm Hurt": Macon Renters Seek Answers as Thieves Target Mercer Storage Units

The Bibb County Sheriffs Department is looking into allegations of theft and vandalism at a Macon self-storage facility, with multiple tenants claiming their possessions have gone missing.

The events took place at Mercer Self Storage on Mercer University Drive Renters report that their locks were removed and belongings were discarded without prior notice.

Catina Williams arrived at Mercer Self Storage in early April and was shocked to discover that her lock had vanished, along with all of her possessions, leaving nobody nearby to address her inquiries.

"It’s simply tragic that someone would resort to such extremes to seize something another person has earned," Williams stated.

Williams mentions that her final automatic deduction occurred in March, however, she hasn’t seen any further transactions from her account since then.

She mentioned that her first awareness of the incident occurred in April.

Williams is not alone among renters seeking solutions. Other tenants report that their apartments were burglarized last week. Despite having new locks installed, they discovered these had been tampered with once more upon returning, along with additional possessions missing.

“I am wounded and let down,” stated Marsha Selby, who was leasing two units during the refurbishment of her house.

Selby mentions that she lost furniture, tools, and various belongings that took her years to save up for.

"When I finished with my space, I bring things in gradually, so everything from before is completely gone," she stated.

Tenants mention that the interior of the storage office is bare. A written notification affixed to the entrance states that the office has been shut down and provides a phone number for contacting them; however, all calls apparently redirect directly to voicemail.

What tenants find more unsettling is the lack of response from the company.

"I require answers. I need to understand what the subsequent steps are and what actions will be taken regarding the losses I've experienced," Williams stated.

"People stealing from others — this situation is bound to deteriorate," another tenant chimed in.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office states that all allegations are currently under investigation by their Criminal Investigations Division.
